Don’t Make Finding Your Will a Treasure Hunt
Earlier this week I received a distraught phone call from a dear friend whose mother had recently passed away. Of course, it was a very difficult time. But unfortunately, it was made even worse by the fact that she and her siblings couldn’t find their mother’s will. The first thing she said was, “You have to write a blog post about this!”
They knew that she had recently redone it, but when they went to look for it, it was not where they expected it to be. So, they had spent days playing detective - combing through her things, searching her phone and email for clues, and becoming more and more frustrated. I had some ideas for her, but really the best thing for a situation like this is to prevent it in the first place.
Hence, this blog post urging you to:
1) keep your important documents in a safe, conspicuous place in your home;
2) reach out to your loved ones to tell them where you keep your important documents and ask about theirs; and
3) consider making copies and keeping those in a different location just in case the originals can’t be found.
Even the best laid plans are no use if they can’t be found. By taking some easy steps now, you can prevent a lot of stress later. If you have questions about how to prepare and store your legacy plan, make an appointment to speak with an experienced estate planning attorney at Acorn Law.
